images from sketches done, at first for the Rhizome / openprocessing 256-character Tiny Sketch contest.

i returned to them and made some caps, and tried to get them to run properly in processing.js. Here’s that, sketch 1 and sketch 2

24 things to do with 100 line segments

from a long long time ago, there is a page in a sketchbook of mine called 39 things to do with 100 line segments. this is 24 of them. 1 was hard, the rest were lame.

here are the rest. done with raphael.js and the drawn line, and other trick from my implements

random point within a circle, even distribution, no problem, in javascript.

ok, i needed to plot random points within a circle. the most intuitive solution (random angle, random radius) gives you an uneven distribution. points clustered in the center. the internet says to do this often. the internet is wrong.

i found a little link that had the right idea at the core.

the clutch math is this:

tmp = radius*Math.sqrt(Math.random())
angle = 2*Math.PI*Math.random()

x = tmp * Math.cos(angle) + centerX
y = tmp * Math.sin(angle) + centerY

that’s it. pass in the circle’s radius, center x/y. here’s that in a javascript function.

var randomCoordsInACircle = function(cx, cy, radius) {
  var r2 = radius*Math.sqrt(Math.random());
  var angle = 2*Math.PI*Math.random();

  return {
    angle: angle,
    x: (r2 * Math.cos(angle) + cx),
    y: (r2 * Math.sin(angle) + cy)
  }
};

more-or-less a quick demo of at least 3 features of the implements project

sketchpad and implements for Raphael.js now on github

i’ve put 2 thing up on github. these are some of the things i use over and over at the55.net. maybe you’ll enjoy them.

the first is called “implements” and it allows you to do some things that look somewhat hand-drawn. it also has a crude spiral, as well as some tools to draw arcs and repeat objects on a grid.

the second is called “sketchpad”. this is a way for you to easily, repeatedly generate your sketch. complete with “pause” button. this is all over the55.net/sketches.
